With chalk draw a line around the pipe where you want to cut it, put the edge of the chisel on the line and hammer the end of it. Added to that, making a repair means we have to cut out a piece of the pipe that is leaking and replace that section with pvc pipe. This is primarily noticed in walls where the upper floors drain vertically to lower floors.

You then apply the epoxy putty by pushing it into the hole or crack in the pipe. This will involve cutting the floor and removing the entire cast iron pipe where it currently runs under the floor and replacing it. Even if the cast isn’t hot, the friction will build heat quickly.

If the cuts you make will leave a long section of pipe unsupported, install pipe hangers or riser clamps on both sides of the section you will cut. When cutting cast iron pipe, i used a lenox 9 inch diamond recip saw blade that has tangs on both ends, so you can switch ends when one section gets dull. Put on the goggles and gloves.

Cast iron in it pure state is called grey cast or pig iron and in bygon times was used to tip cutting tool because it is one of the hardest metals they had.normaly cast iron is very easy to cut and drill as the carbon acts like wax ,but if the iron as been chilled when made or quenched in water it reverts back to gray cast iron.ps this also happens when casting thin pipes like drain pipes. It is from just above the basement floor (built into a side wall) and runs all the way through the roof for vent. So with that mind, it’s more than likely any system made of cast iron will need to be replaced in the next five to 20 years (closer to five than 20, by the way).

Create a marking line and use the hammer and chisel to score the line around the pipe. Connect the electric drill to the drill bit. If you don’t have a crawl space and you can’t do the reroute option then your next best choice is to replace the cast iron pipes in the existing locations.
